Explore the lesser known (and more solitary, beautiful, and delicious) Priorat and Montsant region of Tarragona province in southern Catalunya, and you will know a place dear in our hearts which few others have yet discovered. Come be among the first!

We will ride secondary roads with very little traffic, up and down the terraced vineyards of the incomparable Priorat wine region, which have been producing wine since the foundation of the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei (“Ladder of God”) in 1285. We will pass through Olive and Hazelnut orchards, and through the forests of the Serra de Llaberia with the opportunity to ride all the way out to the edge of the rock outcropping which is home to the town of Llaberia – next step, 300m/1000ft down! Much of the time we will be accompanied by the imposing rock curtain that is Montsant, the “Holy Mountain”, in the distance … and, on one day, we will ride right up to its walls.

During or after each day’s ride (at your option), we have the opportunity to visit historical sites such as the archaeological dig at the Scala Dei monastery; the town of Siurana high above the reservoir to which it gives its name and the last holdout of the Muslims in Catalunya against the Christian re-conquest; the museum of the history of the Mines of Bellmunt; or possibly even (given plenty of advance notice!) the nuclear power station at Ascó on the Ebre river which, with its two 1000MW Pressurized Water Reactors, generates some 3% of all of Spain’s electricity.

We will also ride past several wind farms, part of Spain’s 30% of total generating capacity made up of renewable sources. If the wind is right, we will listen to the eerie ‘whir’ and ‘whup’ of the 35m-50m/ 100ft-150ft long blades as they slowly turn and we silently ride past.
Weather permitting, we may have the chance to take a cooling dip during a hot ride in the Montsant river or possibly kayak and swim in the Els Guiamets reservoir.

Also, each day, we may (again, at your option) visit one of the many wineries of the Priorat and taste their wines (perhaps even the Cellers Scala Dei, still operated by the family which acquired these lands after the Crown dismantled the monasteries’ power in 1835), and we will enjoy the delicious countryside cuisine of Catalunya. Have you ever tasted a ripe wine grape straight from the vine? It’s a whole different experience than a table grape. If your visit occurs around the ‘vendimia’ around September/October – the harvest when the grapes are ripe, you can have this amazing taste experience! Or, if your visit occurs during another season, around January-February, you may choose to enjoy a “Calçotada” as one of your meals!
